Mustangs
The Mustangs Square Dance club was formed in February of 1965 by caller Ivan
Sells. They danced the 1st & 3rd Saturday at 201 North 38th Street in Kansas
City, Kansas and had five squares of members and were federated in January 1966.
In September, 1966, the club moved to the 1st Presbyterian Church at 4000
Victory Drive, Kansas City, Kansas, and danced on the 1st & 3rd Friday's.
In December of 1968, the Mustangs moved to Trinity Lutheran Church at Hwy 50 &
Nall in Mission, Kansas. In September, 1972 they moved to NE JO CO YWCA at 9200
Santa Fe Drive, Overland Park, Kansas. Asbury UMC at 75th & Nail became their
new home in Sept, 1974.
Ivan Sells retired from calling May 20, 1977 with a big finale dance with the
help of Jim Jefferies. Jim took over as caller in September, 1977 and called for
the Mustangs until February, 1984. The Mustangs moved to Osage Community Center,
6300 West 87th in September 1982. In January, 1983, they moved to 1st Lutheran
Church, 6400 State Line Road.
Mike Kelly began calling September, 1984. In September 1985, the dance night
changed to the 2nd & 4th Saturday. In September 1987, they decided to dance only
on the 2nd Saturday so they could visit more clubs.
In September, 1988, Jay Krebs became the Mustangs caller. Jay wanted to cut back
on his calling, so he resigned in May of 1996. The Mustangs had guest callers
until they hired Norm Madison in April, 1997. Due to some health problems, Norm
resigned May, 1999. Lynn Nelson became the caller in September 1999 and is still
with the Mustangs.
In September, 2000, the dance night was changed to the 2nd
Friday. In March,
2001 the Mustangs moved to St. Mark' s UMC, 6422 Santa Fe Drive, Overland Park,
Kansas.
February 2005 was the 40th anniversary for the Mustangs.
The Mustangs have been dancing 41 years.
